Wind Down & Speak Up

The confidence session

Online session | We work from a quiet reflection, to real insight and end with an invitation to share.

Everyone who comes to us says the same thing. "I want to be a more confident speaker."

Almost nobody says what's underneath it. That you don't deserve to be in the room. That everyone else knows more. That your voice is wrong, that you're boring. That you're an imposter, and the moment you open your mouth, people will find out.

We hear these sentences every week. They are not facts. They are beliefs, and beliefs can be questioned.

So we're setting aside half an hour at the end of the working day to question them. On 16 September, we look at what happens in our minds before we stand up to speak.

What happens

A short round so you know who is in the room.

Then 15 minutes of silent coaching. Dyane guides you through a reflection on your own experience of speaking in public: what you think, what you feel, where you notice it in your body. You write. Nobody watches you, nobody comments, nobody performs.

Then we take the beliefs that surfaced and ask one question. Is this actually true?

And when the answer is no, we ask the harder one. Then what is true? You are invited to write your own new sentence. Some people land on I have something worth adding. Yours is a new truth for you to discover.

We close with 10 minutes together. Share an insight if you want to. Stay quiet if you'd rather.

Dyane is a certified ICF coach and has been guiding people through this kind of reflection since 2014.

Why do we meet at the end of the day?

Researchers at Harvard Business School gave one group of workers 15 minutes at the end of each day to write about what they had learned. Another group kept working. After ten days, the group that reflected performed significantly better.*

The reason was not extra practice. It was confidence. Reflection raised their belief in their own ability, and that belief changed what they could do.

*Di Stefano, Gino, Pisano & Staats, Harvard Business School, 2016

So we are giving you that 15 minutes.

Bring something to write on. Bring yourself as you are after a full day. That is the point.
